Community Investment Group
In the UK, we’ve just set up a Community Investment Group so we can bring together our approach to community investment. We want it to be focused and measurable. We’re encouraging employees to take part and deliver real benefit to our communities.
CommunityMark
Our integrated approach was validated by achieving Business in the Community’s (BiTC) CommunityMark in May 2010. The CommunityMark is the UK’s only national standard that publicly recognises excellence in community investment. Lend Lease is the first property company and one of only 35 companies to achieve this standard.
Considerate Constructors’ Scheme
We are a founding associate member of the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme - an independently assessed voluntary code of practice covering issues such as environmental awareness, relations with the public, site welfare and safety of those on and off site. In the UK, all of our construction projects are registered with the Considerate Constructors’ Scheme. In 2009-10, our development business set a target of ensuring all construction sites achieve at least 35 points. The maximum is 40 points. Our projects average more than 35 – more than the industry average of 30.
We’ve won a number of Considerate Constructors’ Scheme awards including first prize as the Most Considerate Constructor over the ten years 1997 to 2007.
The Guvnors’ Club
Founded in 1929, the Guvnors’ Club promotes fellowship and goodwill amongst employees by organising social events around the country and raising money for charity (more than £100,000 a year). It actively supports charities like the Red Cross, British Heart Foundation, Barnardo’s, Childline, MacMillan Nurses, London Air Ambulance and the Children’s Magic Taxi Tour.
Foundation
Founded in 1983, the Lend Lease Foundation gives employees opportunities to connect, learn and enhance their wellbeing in support of our company values and the communities we work within. Once a year there is a global ‘Community Day’ when our employees are encouraged to volunteer for local community projects. Throughout the year support is also given to communities near our offices, assets or projects across the world.
BeOnsite
BeOnsite was set up by our construction and project management business in the UK as a non-profit organisation to provide training and sustainable jobs related to the construction industry.
There are three strands to BeOnsite:
What's Next
We’re developing a regional community investment strategy which captures our global aspirations and responds to local needs. This means we’ll achieve full UK disclosure of our community investment activities by the end of next reporting year. We’ll include our continental Europe operations in our measurement and reporting efforts.
Lend Lease is looking to join London Benchmark Group (LBG) managed by Corporate Citizenship to align our data collection with the well-regarded LBG model. This will give us consistency and transparency in our data collection when we join in the coming year.
Case Study: The Learning Shop – Bluewater Apprenticeship Scheme
The Bluewater Apprenticeship Scheme was launched on 21 April 2009. It was part of Bluewater’s 10th anniversary pledge to continue its commitment to meet local community needs and raise the educational and retail career aspirations of local young people.
Developed by Bluewater and The Learning Shop - a pioneering partnership between Lend Lease, North West Kent College and Jobcentre Plus - the Bluewater Apprenticeship Scheme has just entered its second year. It is providing 16 to 24 year olds with the skills, experience and a recognised qualification vital to a career in retail. Successful candidates benefit from a programme which includes classroom and placement-based training to achieve an NVQ level two certificate in retail knowledge and level two diploma in retail skills.
The Bluewater Apprenticeship Scheme is unique in providing insight into every aspect of running a successful retail business, from working on the shop floor, to being part of the Bluewater management team and aims to provide retailers with a talent pool of job-ready young people.
The scheme has received strong support from a number of organisations during its first year, including the local MP - the Minister for Skills and:
