Green Building Projects
Lend Lease is committed to consistently delivering best-practice environmentally sustainable solutions and, ultimately, we aspire for our carbon, water and waste impacts to be zero net for what we design, construct and develop, for the communities we build and influence, for what we manage and for what we own.
In terms of our green building project performance, we report the following progress:

Green Building Councils
In September 2007, the Lend Lease Board affirmed that we would support Green Building Councils in the geographies in which we operate and support through employees contributing to Green Building Council committees.
Lend Lease is a founding member of the USA, UK, UAE and Australian Green Building Councils. We are also actively involved in the establishment of Green Building Councils in other regions, such as Spain, China and Malaysia.
Currently, employees hold board directorships in the New York and Colorado Chapters of the US Green Building Council (USGBC), Australian Green Building Council and UK Green Building Council.
Additional committee positions are held on the:

Monitoring and Reporting
As part of Lend Lease’s Environmental Management System, routine monitoring, reporting and auditing of our environmental metrics, legal compliance and overall performance
is conducted.
For more detail see Smarter Systems.
Performance Monitoring
We have developed and implemented an internal environmental data collection, verification, monitoring, analysis and reporting tool called ‘Insight Environment’.
Insight Environment allows Lend Lease to gain access to environmental performance information, which is used to meet regulatory compliance, support our external reporting commitments and inform operational efficiency and strategy. This information is used by operations and management employees with designated limits of authority.
In addition to Insight Environment, appropriately trained Lend Lease employees regularly perform environmental inspections, visits and audits of our projects and procedures. This also ensures compliance with our Environmental Management System requirements. Monitoring our environmental performance using our Environment, Health and Safety Management System enables us to continually improve our operations and processes.
We also commission independent environmental auditors, where required, to ensure our Environmental Management System continues to meet our own and external benchmarked quality and system standards.
Compliance and Performance Reporting
Lend Lease Executives and Directors have a responsibility to publicly report significant breaches of environmental legislation or regulations that are a consequence of our operations.
Our Environmental Management System includes reporting environmental compliance information for all businesses. This includes informing Directors and Executive Management of any significant environmental incidents.
Environmental compliance and performance reports are provided to Lend Lease Executive and Non-Executive Directors on a quarterly basis and disclosed within our Annual Report.
Lend Lease externally reports on its environmental compliance and performance via the following:
Auditing and Management Review
Operation of an Environmental Management System requires all Lend Lease businesses to perform routine environmental site or asset inspections as part of the wider management system audits. The inspection and audit findings are used by the businesses to inform continual improvements to their Environmental Management System.
Lend Lease Internal Audit also performs routine auditing of environmental metrics collected and reported by the businesses in accordance with our environmental metrics guidelines and assurance documentation.
Innovation & Environmental Excellence
We recognise that being green is not just about achieving environmental compliance and improving the energy, water or waste efficiency of our operations, it is about achieving ecological sustainability through continual improvement and innovation.
Direct Investment in Innovation
Over the past few years Lend Lease Ventures has directly invested in several organisations that offer innovative opportunities to improve sustainability in the built environment in the Clean Technology sector.

Partnering in Sustainable Solutions
Building on its leadership position in the delivery of sustainable property solutions, Lend Lease has a supply agreement with First Solar, Inc., (Nasdaq: FSLR) one of the world's leading solar technology providers. Lend Lease's Project Management and Construction business has signed a contract with First Solar for the supply of 10 megawatts (MW) of solar panels.

Environmental Research & Development
Project Zephyr and beyond
Project Zephyr was conceived to imagine a building in the future that would generate all its own energy, produce and recycle all its water, send no waste to landfill and to demonstrate the capability within Lend Lease to be able to deliver it today. The project involved an extensive and detailed research exercise and we are now working on a number of opportunities to apply this unique knowledge to an operational project.

Environmental Leadership
Zero Net Carbon Homes - The Ft. Campbell Family Housing project, in partnership with the Army, have begun developing a demonstration of zero net energy LEED Platinum homes as an achievable standard for new military housing. Using a DoD research grant the team is monitoring post occupancy energy and water usage on a net-zero energy duplex home design. By comparing real time data from the net-zero design against standard duplex, we are establishing a feedback loop that will inform future choices for more efficient homes.
Alternative Materials - We continue research into net zero carbon, water and waste construction to explore cross-laminated timber as an alternative to structural concrete, planning to test this material on a development this year.
Next Generation Commercial Office Buildings – In May 2008, The Gauge in Australia achieved a 6 Star Green Star Certified Rating for its design, and in June it became the first building to receive the ESD Award of Excellence by VicUrban. The Gauge is an evolutionary workplace and the first commercial building in Australia to receive a 6 Star Green Star - Office As Built Certified Rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. Winner of the Premier's Sustainability Awards 2009: Built Environment.
Next Generation Retail Centres – The 313@somerset retail centre in Singapore has achieved the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award recognising its sustainability initiatives including:
