Global Alliance
"We share an aspiration to become a truly sustainable organisation and strive to reduce the environmental impact of our work. With an increased demand for green buildings, it’s a smart business move, and it will benefit our communities for generations to come. "
~Ross Shute, Director, Global Alliance and North West Europe
Global Alliance is our long-term joint venture with BP, through which we provide consultancy, construction and maintenance services to retail sites around the world.
We have a proud history of collaborative partnerships. When it comes to sustainability, we believe that no single organisation has all the answers, or the capability to tackle the challenges that lie ahead.
Through our successful partnership with BP, we can help to promote more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable retail sites, such as BP’s service station, 29th & J in Sacramento, California.
Snapshot
With BP’s service station, 29th & J, the Global Alliance team worked closely with the US Green Building Council to determine a new rating system for convenience retail facilities.
Although Green Building Certification was available for most commercial and residential buildings, there was no rating system for retail sites. Our aim was to develop a set of measurable criteria to guide us through the green building process. Our challenge was to deliver the site to BP within budget, to the specified time frame and to the normal high-quality standards expected, whilst taking on the additional work and modifications required to achieve LEED certification.
We were determined to prove that sustainability could be incorporated into our project objectives. We established good relationships with local contractors and suppliers and in August 2007, 29th & J opened to the public. As the first BP retail site to achieve the new rating, it set a benchmark for future development.
Obtaining LEED certification was a challenging experience for the whole team. We had to work collaboratively with all our stakeholders, sharing knowledge and expertise to ensure that we still delivered the project on time and on budget.
We worked closely with our suppliers to ensure that all the materials we used complied with stringent guidelines, with more than 50 percent of the wood used being Forest Stewardship Council certified. Water-efficient landscaping and high indoor environmental quality have also resulted in health benefits for employees and customers.
29th & J is proof that by placing sustainability at the heart of the planning and construction process, we can deliver long-term benefits to the communities in which we operate and influence the construction process industry-wide. In addition to the experience we gained at Helios House, the Global Alliance will continue to make sustainability an integral part of the way we work.
